to mitt romney's and paul ryan's budget plan, it would cost $2,000 to pay for tax breaks for millionaires and billionaires, it turns medicare into a voucher system. that's one thing that mitt romney was honest about. he said that we should cut medicare benefits. embrace that and proposed it. and then to add insult to injury said, yeah, we won't be able to have medicare to continue to be a guarantee, we will have to shred that safety net to preserve it. barack obama's plan has proven we can add years of solvency, 8 years by making sure we reduce wasteful subsidies to medicare insurance companies and add years of solvency. we need to work together to continue to move forward, not have republicans rooting for failure and really transparently being disappointed that we have made progress. we have a ways to go, but we need to continue to move forward and fight for the middle class, not for the people who are doing really, really well and make sure they can do even better. >> shannon: you brought up obamacare. and medicare, but that's a plan, which outside independent bodies and fact-checking o

performance versus governor romney and ryan were for posterity. opportunities, a revitalization of the free market situation. it's a very clear contrast. bill: i asked governor strickland how much debate number one set back their momentum. he kicked it to the side and i expected him to with regard to that. what do you think that first debate did in order to shape and define the race that leads us to tonight in danville. >> i think that that debate certainly energized the campaign and gave governor romney a great deal of momentum. i don't think there is any doubt about it. i think people saw that governor romney was very much in command of the facts, more so than the president was. he made a very compelling argument for how he can get the economy moving again e. tkeufd it in a way that was very respectful for the office of the presidency without being inch dim natured by the man who holds the office e. dead it in way that a lot of americans had respect for. i think it was a terrific performance. the important thing was the underlying substance. governor romney has a view of posterity. bill:

"i was not calling ryan out. i had an opportunity to ask a direct question to ryan and what i got was a complete direct answer with no spin." she now wants specific on president obama economic plan. romney aid accusing cnn of taking the governor comments out of middle east out of context. cnn put words in today's romney speech on foreign policy where he pledges to recommit the u.s. to democratic prosperous palestinian debate. juxtapose against clip where they say palestinians have no interest in peace. they say they lef

the truth about what i'm saying without actually calling him auloier. auloier -- a liar. romney is going to have to do a little better than ryan did because ryan almost tack it a little too easily. jason? >> i agree. i think one of the problems with ryan's performance was allowing biden to get away with a lot of what you want to do, particularly on foreign policy, is similar to what we are doing. he has to differentiate themselves. they have to differentiates themselves on all these things from foreign policy to the domestic policy. but one of the weaknesses of the liar claim, i don't think it works well with the general public. all politicians they think stretch the truth. i don't know it's effective en those grounds alone. >> they aren't trying to repute romney, they are trying to ruin romney and they have been trying to do that from the beginning. i kind of degree with you, paul. >> think next week mitt romney has to call barack obama out in this tactic and put it in his face and tell the american people exactly what is going on here. >> let's look at a new mitt romney ad that is new
what joe biden has said in public. he has been studying that ryan plan even though it's not a romney plan, and mitt romney has sort of distanced himself a bit from some things that are in the ryan plan. you can just sort of see biden planning to kind of tie the two of them together around a plan and say, look, this is not for the middle class. it will ruin the middle class, and you know that's coming. >> you're moderating the second presidential debate coming up on october 16th, which is very exciting for all of us here at cnn. how are you preparing? >> oh, man. every way i can. you know, i'm listening. we have a great team, the folks you never see on the camera here at cnn, that bring me research stuff that say, hey, there's this, there's that, here's the other thing. it's a little bit of everything, and you're also just sort of while this builds up, and the president will go out and do this. you're just trying to maintain a kind of zen level here so when you go out, it's just a good substantive debate and exchange between the two guys. >> well, we're excited for you. we know you'll
